The episodes of the Japanese anime series Gintama were animated by Sunrise. The first 99 episodes were directed by Shinji Takamatsu. Episodes 100 to 105 were directed by Takamatsu and Yoichi Fujita, while following episodes only by Fujita.[1] It premiered on TV Tokyo on April 4, 2006, and finished on March 25, 2010 with a total of 201 episodes. [2][3] The anime is based on Hideaki Sorachi's manga of the same name.[4] The story revolves around an eccentric samurai, Gintoki Sakata, his apprentice, Shinpachi Shimura, and a teenage alien girl named Kagura. All three are freelancers who search for work in order to pay the monthly rent, which usually goes unpaid anyway.
In Japan, Aniplex distributes the anime in DVD format.[5] A total of thirteen volumes were released for the first season, between July 26, 2006 and June 26, 2007.[6] The second season was released over another set of thirteen volumes between July 25, 2007 and July 23, 2008.[7] Season 3 was released in thirteen volumes from August 27, 2008 to August 26, 2009.[8] The fourth season was collected in thirteen DVD volumes from October 28, 2009 to October 27, 2010.[9][10] Prior to the series' premier, an original video animation (OVA) of Gin Tama by Sunrise was showing at Jump Festa Anime Tour in 2005.[11] A ten-minute long OVA named Shiroyasha Kotan (白夜叉降誕, lit. "White Demon's Birth") , set in the war between aliens and samurais, was shown in Jump Festa 2008. On September 30, 2009, it was published a DVD named Gintama Jump Anime Tour 2008 & 2005 which contains the 2005 and 2008 OVAs.[12] While the series ended with the fourth season, a sequel titled Gintama' started airing in Japan in April 2011.[13]
On January 8, 2009, the streaming video site Crunchyroll began offering English subtitled episodes of the series. The episodes are available on Crunchyroll within hours of airing in Japan to paying members. The episodes can also be watched for free a week after release. The first available episode was episode 139. On the same day, Crunchyroll also began uploading episodes from the beginning of the series at a rate of two a week.[14] The anime is licensed by Sentai Filmworks, with distribution from Section23 Films. Section23 Films' Chris Oarr commented that only the first two seasons were licensed, with an option on the rest.[15] The first collection containing thirteen English-subtitled episodes was released on DVD, April 27, 2010.[16][15]

As Gintoki complains of writing News Years cards, Yorozuya learn of what his friends have done over the holidays. He also receives cards saying his friends have gotten married, while they have lied and just Photoshopped the photos. The episode ends with Kondo, Sachan and Hasegawa telling their story of how they wrote a News Years card. The second part starts with the same opening, but Gin complains of the lack of chocolate. Kagura has a chocolate for Gintoki and Shinpachi, but is too embarrassed to give to them. She enlists the help of Otae, Sachan and Tsukuyo to help, but they are each too embarrassed to help her and make her give their chocolates to Gintoki. She indifferently give Gintoki and Shipachi the chocolate saying they were on the door step, as the happily run for the chocolate, they find all the chocolates were said to be from Kagura. |

| Jirocho and Gin battle Kada's elite Harusame forces while the rest of the denizens of Kabuki-cho take on her main forces in the streets. Kada is utterly stunned when her elite forces are beat by just these two humans, and flees the scene. Gin then helps Jirocho resolve his issues regarding Tatsugoro; Otose and Jirocho reconcile at the hospital. Outside the hospital, Kada desperately launches one last feeble attempt at conquering Kabuki-cho, but is stopped in her tracks by Pirako and the Yorozuya - Kada settles for swearing that the Harusame will be back, and flees yet again. At the very end, Jirocho denounces all other names he has ever been called except for Father of Pirako, and goes with his daughter back to the country. | ||

| Kagura's older brother, Kamui, visits Kada's cell where she is being kept after having been captured by the Kiheitai and loses at a game of odds or evens. He is approached by one of the 12 captains who tells him he has the 12 captains support if he chooses to overthrow Admiral Abo. Kamui orders his second to kill the members of the Kiheitai, isolating Takasugi so Kamui can duel him. As the Kiheitai's ship is about to be attacked the Admiral double crosses Kamui and imprisons him out of fear. Takasugi visits Kada's cell and loses at a game of odds or evens. After a brief conversation Takasugi rescues Kamui at his execution, overthrowing Admiral Abo. Kamui becomes Admiral and the episode ends with Takasugi visiting Kada's cell one last time to lose at a game of odds or evens. | ||
